The meeting is a tribute and a memorial to Ivo Van Damme. Van Damme died in a tragical car accident in December 1976. A few months earlier Van Damme won silver medals in both the 800m and the 1500m at the Montreal Olympic Games. His national records on the 800m and 1000m have not been broken yet.
To commemorate the athlete the very first Memorial Ivo Van Damme was held in 1977. From then on the meeting was becoming more and more important. Now the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme is the IAAF Diamond League Final. The world’s best athletes come to Brussels every year to close their season.
On the 40th edition it is required that the image of Ivo Van Damme is present in the work of art. The AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme especially addresses this contest to young artists. Competitors must be born in 1994 or earlier (maximum age 22 years).
The contest starts on Monday, Feb. 8 and ends on Friday, Mar. 18. The jury comprises Wilfried Meert (Meeting Director AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme) , Cédric Van Branteghem (former athlete and assistant Meeting Director AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme) and Frija Leunens (Brand Manager AG Insurance).
On Monday Apr. 4 the winner will be informed and the result will officially be announced. The winner will receive 5000 euro prize money to allow him or her to further develop their talent.
