Pole Vaulter Fabiana Murer from Brasil and Steeplechaser Paul Kipsiele Koech from Kenya will be competing for the last time in international athletics during the 40th Brussels Diamond League meeting. Murer who is now aged 35 makes a bid to become the Olympic champion in front of her home crowd this week. Murer never won Olympic medals in her career but won gold and silver at the World Championships in 2011 and in 2015 respectively. Murer set a personal best of 4.87m recently, proving that she is on top of her game.
At the age of 34 Paul Kipsiele Koech is still one of the best steeplechasers in the world. Koech cracked the magical 8 minutes barrier on the distance no less than 9 times and holds the third alltime performance with7.54.31. The actual 3000m steeplechase world record was set by former Kenyan Saif Saeed Shaheen from Qatar in Brussels in 2004.
EXPOSITION 40 YEARS OF MEMORIAL VAN DAMME AT THE ROYAL PALACE
At the Royal Palace in Brussels an exposition is held with the theme “Science behind the sports”. A part of the exposition is dedicated to the Memorial Van Damme, the Brussels DL-meeting. Amongst other memorabilia the outfit that Ivo Van Damme wore at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal can be admired as well as his diary in which he carefully noted all his training and competition information.
Many throphies are also exposed that were handed to the event winners at the Memorial Van Damme. On interactive screens the highlights of previous editions can be seen, as well as images of the world records that were broken in Brussels and a number of great pictures from the meeting.
“Science behind the sports” is an exposition from Technopolis in collaboration with the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme and Sportimonium. It can be visited until September, 4th at the Royal Palace in Brussels.
