The Mohammed VI Meeting in Rabat will be taking place on May, 22nd and it is the third leg of the IAAF Diamond League. On May, 6th the circuit opens in Doha, Qatar, followed by Shangai, China on May, 14th. 14 meetings are part of the IAAF Diamond League. By choosing Rabat the IAAF Diamond League expands into the African continent for the first time.
Traditionally the IAAF Diamond League is closed by the Brussels meeting in the King Baudouin stadium which will be held on Sep, 9th this year. This decision is very rewarding for the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme and for the Region of Brussels Capital. From its first edition in 2008 the Rabat meeting has been intensively supported by the Region of Brussels Capital who is also involved in numerous other development project in the Rabat-Salé area in Morocco.
“The operational support of the Rabat meeting has always been provided by the organizing committee of the Brussels meeting. We have patiently worked to gradually lift this meeting to a higher level and we’re delighted that Rabat has now deserved this great recognition and status. It is a reward for the effort that our team has delivered with the support of the Region of Brussels Capital and minister Guy Vanhengel”, commented Brussels meeting director Wilfried Meert.
IAAF president Sebastian Coe is equally satisfied : “We are happy to include the African continent for the first time in the IAAF Diamond League, but we also want to thank New York for all the work that they have done in the past 6 years. We know that they will continue to support and promote athletics in the coming years. Now we are proud to welcome the city of Rabat !”
