Father Milanov was a very useful Discus Thrower himself back there in Bulgaria, with a personal best of 58.28m. But he never reached the 60m barrier that is considered as a standard of international class.
Son Philip did succeed in breaking the 60m barrier already in 2013, the year in which he became fifth at the European Under 23 Championships in Tampere.
The big breakthrough for Milanov followed this year with an early season record breaking throw of 64.32m on February, 23rd. He broke the 13 year old national record of Jo Van Daele, who also has been coached in the past by Emil Milanov.
On July, 8th in Hengelo Milanov really moved into the highest international territory when he throwed the Discus a massive 66.02m, finishing third behind Olympic Champion Harting and former European and vice-Olympic Champion Malachowski. That throw also earned Milanov a spot in the top 10 of the World 2014 season lists.
Another big dream had come true for the 23 year old athlete from Bruges : to be on the Entry List of the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme and the final leg of the IAAF Diamond League on September, 5th where he will figure amongst the World’s greatest Discus Throwers.
