Everyone who crosses the finish line at the King Baudouin Stadium will be in good company. Hundreds of top athletes have already shone on this track. The 10k is the main event of the AG Memorial van Damme. Of the 50 fastest 10k times ever run, an amazing 24 were run in Brussels.
After starting on the track, the course will take participants to a couple of hidden gems on the Heysel. The Park of Laeken, Jan Sobieski Park and Ossegem Park may not be well known for the general public, but there are very much worth it. The Heysel plains is never completely flat, which makes this 10k pretty arduous and an ideal preparation for the major running events later this season.
Olympian at the start
None other than Manuela Soccol has made a goal of this 10km. Soccol represented Belgium at the past Olympic Games on the marathon. The Genk resident has fond memories of Brussels. She won the tough Brussels 20k in both 2015 and 2016.
Former athlete Cédric Van Branteghem will signal the start of both the Brussels 5k and 10k. Cédric knows the King Baudouin Stadium inside out. In the pulsating atmosphere of the AG Memorial Van Damme he achieved his best results. Cédric will also take part on Sunday, so you can test your form against the former 400 metre runner.
This year the medals will be handed over to the finishers by a couple of very peculiar characters: the Smurfs, who also act as the AG Memorial Van Damme mascots.
