To bring athletics close to the audiences in the hearts of the big cities. That is what the AG Insurance Urban Memorial Van Damme Series is aiming for to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the AG Insurance Memorial Van Damme.
After Namur (High Jump), Ghent (Long Jump), Antwerp (Pole Vault) and Ostend (Discus Throw) Brussels is the next stage of the Series on September, 4th. Cédric Van Branteghem, Assistant Meeting Director of the Brussels Diamond League unveiled the news this Thursday in Ostend. This Friday Philip Milanov and some other international throwers will demonstrate in a high performance Discus Throw event on the beach of Ostend, just off See Heroes Square.
“Discus Throw on the beach will be particularly spectacular, but so will the 200m in Brussels on September, 4th.”, explained Van Branteghem. “On Anspach Avenue, in the new pedestrian area, we build an athletics track of 200m, from Square De Brouckère to the Bourse (Stock Exchange). A 200m straight ! The Borlee twins are guaranteed to be present.”
Turning Anspach Avenue in to a sprint track is a complicated project. A meticulous construction has made it possible to compensate a difference in altitude of 1 meter between start and finish. The result is a fabulous red carpet that will be available for the athletes. And very fast times are expected, because the athletes will not have to run through a bend on this track.
The international race will be held at 17:00 hours. Like it was the case at previous Urban Memorial events there is a pre program with introductory sessions for kids up to 12 years old and competitions for youngsters. Kim Gevaert will lead these sessions. Access is free !
